Imago Relationship Therapy (IRT) is a directed, technique-driven process that focuses on strengthening the connection between couples, known as a conscious partnership. By facilitating communication people stretch through their own defenses and empower their partner. In this way they differentiate themselves as individuals and will be able, as a couple, to address their issues together, on their own. A basic idea of Imago Therapy holds that conflict is change trying to happen and is an opportunity for growth.

Imago Relationship Therapy was started by Harville Hendrix, Ph.D., and Helen LaKelly Hunt, Ph.D. In 1984 they founded Imago Relationships International and published the book Getting the Love You Want in 1988, which now has a fully revised and updated edition celebrating thirty years in print. Today there are over 2,500 Imago therapists who practice in 53 countries worldwide.

Deborah and Ian study Imago Therapy through the Imago Center of Washington DC under the tutelage of Rebecca Sears, MDiv, LPC, and Caroline Bernhardt Lanier, MS, LCPC. Please see our resource page for additional information.
